Killing of individual in reprisal

A mixed patrol of 6 partisans from Companies I, II and VI, disobeying orders from the Command of the III Battalion, crossed the right bank of the Arno and attacked a sidecar at Memmenano, killing one soldier and wounding two others. In retaliation, the Germans shot an old man and deported 30 men. The partisans’ action, which was certainly successful in its outcome but had serious repercussions on civilians, created tension between the formations operating near Pratomagno. The situation was finally resolved with the dismissal of the patrol commander Virgilio Versari.
