Massacre due to artillery shelling

On the evening of August 30th, the German troops left the town of Poppi to withdraw definitively to their positions on the Gothic Line. The next morning, news of the German retreat filled people’s hearts with joy. Little groups of jubilant women and children (partly inhabitants of Poppi, partly evacuees from neighbouring towns) came down from the Abbacy towards Ponte a Poppi, along the old Via della Costa, at times forming little queues to collect water in demijohns and flasks from the nearby spring. Spotting the unusual throng of people near the bridge over the Arno and perhaps fearing that the enemy was preparing to wade across the river, German artillery batteries at Montanino and Vetrignesi launched heavy and accurate artillery fire on Via della Costa, causing the death of 15 people and the wounding of dozens of civilians. The next day the town was liberated by the Allies.

Description

The monument is situated in a small stone-paved area beside the Strada della Costa, the old road that connected Poppi with Ponte a Poppi below. On August 31st 1944, artillery shelling by German rearguards killed or mortally wounded 13 people on this spot. Three steps lead up to the monument. It consists of an octagonal stone column, on top of which an iron cross is fixed. The column rests on a stone plinth, on the front of which there is a brass plaque with an engraved epigraph. It gives the date of the massacre and the names of the victims in alphabetical order. The lettering is lined with black paint. At the corners of the area where the monument is located stand four empty artillery shells. The site is enclosed by a chain on four iron stakes.

Monument also inventoried by the students of the IC Dovizi Bibbiena as part of the Esploratori della Memoria (Explorers of Memory) competition.

News and contextualisation

A cura dell'Istituto Comprensivo Dovizi di Bibbiena. l monumento è stato realizzato nel luogo dove esisteva una fontanella e dove avvenne la strage del 31 agosto 1944. Dall'Atto di notorietà redatto nel 1946 si evince quanto segue:" E' cosa notoria che il 31 agosto 1944 truppe tedesche in ritirata spararono i loro cannoni issati sul monte "Poggio Corniolo" comunemente chiamato Montanino su di un gruppo di civili che si erano recati in località denominata Casa Basagni posta nei pressi di Poppi Stazione per attingere acqua, costretti a ciò dall'interruzione dell'acquedotto del capoluogo ad opera delle stesse truppe tedesche …. un gruppo di 14 persone recatosi a prendere acqua … . il nemico colpì deliberatamente il gruppo poiché data la distanza da cui sparava poteva ben distinguere su chi faceva fuoco ed anche perchè in Poppi non erano ancora giunti gli anglo-americani, né costituiva obiettivo militare". Come si evince dal documento riportato nella pubblicazione a cura di Ildebrando Caiazzo(Associazione Nazionale Combattenti e Reduci. Sezione di Poppi. Poppi un paese tra due guerre. Ed. Settore 8 Editoria 2016 p.103, nota 46) il gruppo di civili morì a causa di cannoneggiamento.
