Toppoli nei pressi della confluenza del fiume Teggina in Arno

11/07/1944

Reprisal

During the rounding-up operations in Quota and Monteborgnoli, the Germans captured Giuseppe Biondi and Guido Fognani, together with Guido Tonveronachi from Ortignano, who had offered himself in place of his brother who had a wife and children. Shortly afterwards they were taken near the bridge at Toppoli and executed. The massacre was part of a reprisal for the killing of two Germans, the wounding of a third, and the capture of two others at Ponte alle Lame on July 9th 1944.

Description

Memorial stone dedicated to three civilian victims (Bondi, Fognani and Tonveronachi) shot by the Germans on July 11th 1944 at the confluence of the Teggina stream with the Arno river, near the Toppoli bridge. It is a simple monument in rough stone, with a rectangular base. The epigraph is engraved on a marble slab embedded in the memorial stone.

Personal observations

Coming from Bibbiena and going in the direction of Ortignano Raggiolo, you cross the bridge over the Arno (Ponte di Toppoli) and turn left shortly afterwards, following the signs for Macee, Lucciano and Riosecco. After less than 200 metres, just before a small bridge over the Teggina stream, you turn left along a wide path that has the stream on its right and a cultivated field on its left. Almost at the embankment of the Arno you turn left onto another path overlooking the field, where after a few yards you will find the memorial stone. At the time of the census it was so derelict that the inscription of the epigraph was almost completely illegible.

News and contextualisation

On July 11th 1944, during a round-up operation, the Germans captured the three civilians Giuseppe Bondi, resident in Ortignano, Guido Fognani, also resident in Ortignano, and Gaspare Tonveronachi, resident in Poppi (Ar). Taken to the Ponte di Toppoli, at the confluence of the Teggina stream with the Arno river, the three were shot and finished off with hand grenades.
