Execution of individual

Following the attack on a German column carried out by the 1st Company of the III Battalion XXIII Brigata “Pio Borri” on July 9th 1944 (2 German soldiers killed, 1 wounded and 2 prisoners), on July 11th the nazi-fascist troops launched a massive operation in the territory of Ortignano Raggiolo. Houses, huts and haystacks, as well as boats carrying freshly harvested wheat, were systematically set on fire. The cattle found in the stables or out grazing were all slaughtered or in a few cases seized as plunder. Troops also attacked isolated farmhouses and one squad reached Mezzettino, where they demanded to search the house. Fearing the kind of thing that might happen, Maria Cecconi rebelled against the Germans’ orders. She was stabbed to death for this.
