Rounding-up and reprisal operation aimed at occupying territory

During the night between April 12th and 13th 1944, the Germans broke into houses in the hamlet of Banzena. Seven young men were dragged out of bed and assembled outside their homes to be shot by soldiers. Some sources hold fascist informers responsible for reporting the presence of deserters and of hunting weapons. Other testimonies speak of the victims’ indirect support of the partisans, perhaps on account of the existence of a large cache of Casentino resistance weapons at the nearby Fragaiola farm, where the partisans of the 1st Company of the Casentino Group hid arms from September to February 1944. The action is undoubtedly linked to the operation launched against Monte Falterona, which simultaneously targeted Vallucciole, Partina, Moscaio and Lonnano. In all probability the unit involved in the operation (whose headquarters was at Villa Marena, in the Municipality of Bibbiena) was the same that stormed Partina, Badia Prataglia and Chiusi della Verna on the same day.

Memorial plaque to those killed in the massacre of 13/4/1944

Description

Marble plaque fixed to the wall with four bronze hooks. It bears inscriptions and a list of the Fallen in bronze lettering in relief. It commemorates the victims of the massacre perpetrated here by the German soldiers of the "H. Göring Division” on April 13th 1944. It lists the names of 9 civilian casualties and the date of their death. The bronze lettering of the epigraph is in relief. The plaque is attached to the wall of the Moscaio village square with four bronze studs and rests on a thin marble sill. In a niche to the left of the plaque is a small statue of the Virgin Mary.

Si narra che Padre Mirabene stesse percorrendo la vecchia strada che collegava Bibbiena a Chiusi della Verna, famosa anche per essere stata percorsa da San Francesco d'Assisi, quando due tedeschi gli intimarono di fermarsi. Egli trascurò l'ordine proseguendo il cammino; ad un ulteriore ordine di fermarsi, gli fu chiesto come si chiamasse ed egli senza fermarsi dichiarò di essere un religioso e di chiamarsi Mirabene. I tedeschi a quel punto sentendosi presi in giro a causa del suo cognome, esordirono dicendo che lo avrebbero "mirato bene loro" e così lo uccisero. Monument to the Fallen of Moscaio

Description

The Monument consists of two irregularly shaped slabs set in the ground and bearing the names of those killed in the Moscaio massacre. Above them stands a stone plaque bearing the date 13-4-1944, an inscription, and photos of 7 of the 8 fallen.
